Nemaline Blues by Marc Grunseit
Kiln formed glass sculpture: 140-centimeters (55-inches) tall
I asked Marc to tell me a little about the glass sculpture to the left:
"One advantage of being an ex medico is the opportunity to make some art work for hospitals in which I used to work. This piece was for a Children's Cancer Research facility in Sydney's premier Paediatric Hospital. It takes Nemaline Myopathy as its subject matter, the gene for which was discovered there."
Biography:
Born in Sydney in 1952, Marc had extensive involvement in art and creative crafts during his school years, complementing a formal education. He studied medicine at the University of New South Wales, graduating in 1977 and was a General Practitioner in a shopfront solo practice for five years.
He took up a long standing interest in stained glass in 1979 and in 1982, sold his medical practice to pursue it full-time. Since then, he has completed numerous commissions, for healthcare, ecclesiastical and public buildings and participated in group and solo exhibitions in galleries worldwide, with various pieces held in public, private and corporate collections worldwide. Marc was the elected National President of the Australian Association of Glass Artists from 1989-1990.
The scope of his work ranges from 25 square meter architectural installations to delicate pieces of kiln formed glass which fit into the palm of the hand. The designs are eclectic but are employed to interpret the natural, social, cultural and mythological Australian environment into unique pieces of glass art.
Marc lives in Australia. Visit his website to see more of his work: www.marcgrunseit.com.au
